Grammatica

Grammar

Building longer sentences: where time, manner, place, and the direct object all go.

a. Word order for longer sentences

So far you've learned that a Dutch sentence starts with the Subject, followed by the (finite) Verb, and ends with the Rest — sometimes including a second verb. That's SVR.

Now let's break the "Rest" down further, into a left, middle, and right part:

LeftMiddleRight
subject + finite verbtimemannerplaceother verb
Ik hebzojuistnetjesin de keukenafgewassen
Loes en Jaap komenmorgengezelligbij onseten.

The middle part usually follows this order:

  1. time (when?)
  2. manner (how? — including "how often")
  3. place (where?)

… and the right part holds a second verb, if there is one.

Where the direct object goes

Many sentences also have a direct object. There are two possibilities:

  • If the article is specific (de or het — or another specific word like "my" or "that"), the direct object goes before the middle part.
  • If the article is non-specific (een, a number, or a word like "some"), the direct object goes after the middle part.

Specific object — before the middle part

LeftDir. obj.t/m/p
Ze hebbende pan met soepgisteren opgemaakt.
Kees wilhet ijsjegraag eten.
Ik geefmijn stamppotvandaag weg
Wij dekkendie tafelsamen.

Non-specific object — after the middle part

Leftt/m/pDir. obj.
Ze hebbengistereneen pan met soep opgemaakt.
Kees wilgraagijsjes (een ijsje) eten.
Ik hebvandaagvijf glazen gebroken!
